JISHOU, HUNAN — I’m angry.
I’m angry about something that happened on the other side of the world, in a city I have never visited.
I’m angry at two men whose entire raison d’etre is to promulgate disinformation for political and social reasons, because they HATE the current president, and liberals, and Democrats, and anybody who is not them.
With one poorly researched, inflammatory article, Jim Hoft and Kristinn Taylor killed a worthwhile charitable project even before it got off the ground. Within minutes, every right-wing media site picked up the story — which was almost 100% wrong — and the resulting publicity led the project’s organizers to abandon the plan.
Weslaco, Texas, could have been home to a facility to take care of immigrant kids coming over the Mexican border. It could have gained a few hundred new jobs. It could have had $50 million added to its local economy.
Because Hoft and Taylor, in their blind hatred, spread lies and misinformation, implying the project was going to be a resort of some kind for illegal aliens, complete with swimming pools, tennis courts, weight rooms, free Wifi and free cable TV.
Here is their headline: FEDS TO OPEN $50 MILLION RESORT FOR ILLEGAL CHILDREN – Complete With Tennis Courts, Sauna & Pools
And their lede.
Welcome to America!
The Obama administration has awarded a $50 million contract to a charitable group to buy a Texas resort hotel and transform it in to a 600 bed facility for juvenile illegal aliens.
No, no, and no.
The feds are not opening a resort for immigrant kids. The Obama administration did not award a $50 million contract to anyone to build the facility. The “resort hotel” is a rundown $70-80 a night 3-star tourist hotel.
The story goes on, each time referring to the site as a “resort hotel” for immigrant children, and missing one very important point.
It would no longer be a hotel.
It was to be sold for $3.8 million — NOT $50 milllion — to Baptist Child and Family Services, which is based in San Antonio and has projects all over the world.
BCFS was going to use non-government funds to buy the Palmaire Hotel and Suites, renovate the property and turn it into a temporary shelter for children crossing the border into the USA.
In other words, all the deluxe hotel stuff would all be gone. Because it wouldn’t be a hotel anymore. It would be repurposed. Like taking an old railway station and turning it into a shopping mall.
As for the $50 million, one of the local county commissioners in Weslaco said the project would have injected that much money into the local economy by adding jobs. The county commission was going to hear the BCFS proposal for the project this week.
In other words, when ace reporter Kristinn Taylor wrote his imflammatory piece of propaganda, the project HAD NOT YET BEEN APPROVED.
No permits had been awarded. No title had been exchanged. No money had changed hands.
Nor will it be. The project is dead in the water, thanks to Taylor’s crackpipe reporting and Jim Hoft’s inexplicable prestige among the right-wing media.
President Barack Obama and his administration had nothing to do with the project. Ironically, BCFS’s officers are white and have donated to Republican candidates, like Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
So, a religious-affiliated organization with Republican connections was going to turn a hotel into a child-care facility, creating both humanitarian and economic benefits.
Thanks to partisan idiots like Jim Hoft and Kristinn Taylor, who apparently like to eat their own kind, it’s not going to happen.
Nice work, suckers. I hope you’re proud of yourselves.
