News from Birtherland 1

JISHOU, HUNAN — Things are not looking good for those folks who think President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the US of A — the birthers. One such is Army Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin, who refused orders to deploy to Afghanistan until Obama released his “long-form” birth certificate. Instead of reporting to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to ship out, the decorated flight surgeon reported to his former post at the Walter Reed Army Hospital. Not such a good idea. The Army takes a dim view of refusing orders. From the Army Times, Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin is charged with one specification under Article 87, missing movement, and four specifications under Article 92, three specifications of failure to obey a lawful order and one dereliction of duty. Lakin had posted a video on YouTube declaring that any “reasonable” person would question Obama’s status as a natural-born citizen. And to make his legal defense even more difficult, he wrote a lengthy explanation of his reasons for a site called the American Thinker. One wonders how carefully they think there. Predictably, there is a website, safeguardourconstitution.com, quixotically dedicated to raise funds for Lakin’s defense fund. It alleges that teh Evil Obama has ...

Federal judge fines birther lawyer Orly Taitz $20K; Taitz says, ‘Nuts!’ 4

JISHOU, HUNAN — US Federal Judge Clay Land, in a scathing 43-page ruling, finally put California lawyer Orly Taitz in her place for filing “frivolous” suits claiming President Barack Obama is not an American citizen. Citing Taitz’ continued misuse of the federal judiciary and her inability to even act like a lawyer, Land ruled sua sponte that Taitz has to pay the federal government $20,000 for violating federal court procedures. Taitz’ response was typically defiant. She told Talking Points Memo that she has no intention of paying. “This is a form of intimidation,” she said. Land’s decision says the court would refer the matter to the US Attorney General’s office for collection, if Taitz fails to pay up. I dunno, I’d be intimidated if it were me. But I’m not monomaniacal. TPM has the details of the latest chapter in the Orly Taitz saga, so I’ll just give the short version. Taitz, a California dentist and real estate broker who earned her law degree from a correspondence school, is convinced that Obama was not born in Hawai’i and is a “usurper” who cannot legally be president. She has dug up any number of documents so bogus that even fellow birthers ...

Orly Taitz hounds Kentucky’s AG and Sec. of State about Obama

JISHOU, HUNAN — The Queen Bee of the Birthers, Orly Taitz Esq., DDS, buzzed over to Kentucky recently to whip up a swarm of angry bee-rthers to visit state officials in Frankfort. She wanted Kentucky state officials to do something, anything, about the “proof” she had that Pres. Barack Obama was actually born outside the USA and therefore ineligible to be president. Taitz, who has a correspondence course law degree and is a member of the California bar, brought a federal issue to Kentucky‘s attorney general’s public corruption office, the secretary of state, and finally (perhaps as an afterthought) to the Kentucky office of the FBI. For the full details, read this account in Esquire of another example of Taitz tilting at windmills. The fact that Taitz could find so many other people who believe the same whacko things she does is just a little scary. That she found them in Kentucky is, well, not so surprising. [Kentucky factoid: The Esquire piece refers to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Range, which is in West Point, Kentucky, about 40 minutes’ drive southwest of Louisville. Travel a bit further south along wide, wide Dixie Highway, and you will come to the Fort ...

Orly Taitz, Don Quixote, and malicious javascript code

JISHOU, HUNAN — Orly Taitz, DDS/lawyer/black belt/speaker of five languages, is a modern day Don Quixote, and like Señor Alonso Quixada (or Quesada — ancient scholars disagree as to his real surname), she is a little nuts. In Cervantes’ novel, Quesada, a middle-aged gentlemen with too much time on his hands, goes a little loopy after spending every waking hour reading books about knights in shining armor, wizards, giants and other such fantastical stuff. Common objects and ordinary people become in Quesada’s mind figures from the chivalric romances. Quesada sees windmills, and as Don Quixote attacks them with his lance, believing them to be giants. He fails miserably, but undaunted, continues to believe in his fantasy world. He tells his squire, Sancho Panza, that wizards fooled him by turning the giants into windmills at the last moment, to disgrace him. [This scene is where we get the idiom, “tilting at windmills,” by the way.] Now, let’s take a look at Orly Taitz, who is obsessed with the false idea that President Barack Obama was never born in the USA. Like the Spanish hero, she rationalizes (I use this word in its broadest sense) any contradictory evidence as part of a ...

Dr. Orly Taitz’ denialist dishonesty 14

JISHOU, HUNAN — Here’s a surprise: I posted a comment at a denialist website pointing out an obvious factual error, and … drum roll please! … the comment was deleted. Or, it has disappeared into moderation limbo. A denialist is one who believes that commonly accepted facts or scientific theories are wrong, despite all evidence to the contrary. There are evolution denialists, gravity denialists (see elsewhere at this site), germ theory denialists, Holocaust denialists, and Barack-Obama-was-born-in-the-USA denialists, among many others. Daily Kos had a story about one Dr. Orly Taitz, a California dentist cum constitutional lawyer who labors under the misconception that Obama was actually born in Indonesia. She insists, among other crazy ideas notions, that Obama was an Occidental College student named Barry Soetoro. That he was not is pretty clear, and I am not going to spend time here debunking her variety of looniness. The woman is convinced she is right, and damn the torpedoes, she’s sticking to her story. In one of her posts, Taitz says the following about the mythical Obama/Soetoro. The spelling and grammatical errors are hers; the highlighted sections are mine. Due to the fact that Obama arrogantly refuses to unseal his vital records ...
